Kinky Queen in the Spotlight

This months Kinky Queen in the spotlight is my Lovely sister Tash.

ARE YOU FULLY NATURAL OR CURRENTLY TRANSITIONING?

I did my big chop in September 2009 after transitioning with weaves and braids for a year. I did have a moment of weakness where I tex-laxed a bit of my hair at the front in an attempt to blend my hair with a weave but most of the perm has grown out now, so I’d say I’m fully natural, however I’m not too sure if you count being natural from the day of your last perm or from the date of your big chop…?

You kept that quiet about tex-laxing Tash….I had no idea…….

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND MANAGING THE 2 TEXTURES?

I found it quite hard to manage both textures whilst transitioning hence the use of weaves, however I did notice that my new growth became more manageable after my wash days.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT REGIME?

hmmm…Good question, I seem to have fallen off the wagon, I used to deep condition my hair every 1-2 weeks but I’ve become quite lazy and have been co-washing and then washing with a sulphate free shampoo, alternating each week.

DO YOU HAVE A HAIR STAPLE? Herbal Essences -Hello Hydration conditioner  and Eco-Styler gel with Olive Oil.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HAVEN’T TRIED THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO?

Kinky Curly and Miss Jessie products, they both contain phenoxyethanol which is a preservative that i am allergic too… 😦

HOW DO YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS?

When I’m being lazy I usually wear my hair in a bun or a puff, I’ve also done my fair share of twist outs but they don’t always  come out the way I want them to, my hair has a life of its own, so I sometimes keep the back of my hair out and have a quiff at the front. The back is my friend the front is temperamental…

DO YOU DO PROTECTIVE STYLING?

Yep, I call it protective styling or otherwise known as let me put my hair away before I do something stupid like perm it again! lol i am actually wearing a kinky curly weave at the moment and apart from the daily co-washing, I quite like it.

HOW HAVE FRIENDS/PARTNERS RESPONDED TO YOU GOING/BEING NATURAL?

My friends were very supportive of my choice to go natural and my best friend and mum also chose to go natural shortly after I began my transition. My boyfriend loves my natural hair but I guess that’s because he himself has natural hair, in the form of locs – he’s been trying to persuade me to go down that route and although I’m intrigued I’m not quite ready for that yet… but who knows maybe in the future.

WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND TO BE THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING NATURAL?

I’d say the hardest thing for me has been understanding my hair what it’s likes and dislikes. I also thought that for some reason natural hair would be less time consuming, was I wrong or what!!! permed hair was 10 times easier for me, if I woke up late for work (which happens, with me lol) I could always throw my hair into a quick ponytail when it was permed. with my natural hair if it decides to work with me that day then its fine, if she feels like playing up, then Houston we have a problem (My hair is a DIVA, she does things when she wants to! lol)

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING NATURAL?

The best thing about being natural is feeling original! I must admit I’m still getting used to it, I actually first unleashed my afro on holiday as I was too self conscious to do it at home in London, but it felt liberating and so many people complimented me on my hair. Wearing natural hair has helped me to boost my confidence as you’re seen a mile off with an afro, there’s nowhere to hide. I saw a lady on the train the other day with natural hair and she looked beautiful, had that true sense of confidence and we looked at each other and smiled – like a silent salute within the natural society.

LASTLY, IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU WOULD LIKE COVERED ON THE KINKY BLOG?

I would be keen to see information on natural meetings and product swapping reviews.

Thanks for your funny and humorous responses Tash. I loved your recount of the silent salute with the fellow Kinkster on the train. I know exactly what you mean, as I always smile when I see someone wearing their natural Kinks.

If you want to see what Tash is up to and how she’s getting on with her regime, pop over to her blog

Next month we’ll have another Kinky Queen or maybe King in the spotlight. If you’d like to feature, in future posts then drop me an email.

  3. Thank u

If just one person acknowledges they find it helpful then its worth it. I know when I first went natural, I didn’t have a clue how to care for my natural hair. It’s taken me a long time to get to the stage im at now. I wish I had blogs I couldve followed when I was starting out..lol….
